Renowned television producer-writer Norman Lear, celebrated for groundbreaking shows like “All in the Family” and “Maude,” passed away at 101. Lear, a six-times Emmy winner, kept an unmarkable sign on American television highlighting social issues. His death, attributed to natural causes, occurred at his Los Angeles home, as confirmed by his publicist to Variety.

Norman Lear’s influential career spanned decades, with a notable resurgence in 2017 when he revamped “One Day at a Time” to focus on a Cuban American family. In 2020, he clinched his sixth Emmy for a live special broadcast of “All in the Family” and “Good Times.” Lear’s dedication to liberal causes, including voting rights, continued well into his 90s.

Recognized for his impact on television and society, Lear’s iconic shows from the ’70s and ’80s, such as “Sanford and Son,” “The Jeffersons,” and “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman,” drew attention to social themes of the time. At its peak, Lear had eight shows on air with an estimated 120 million viewers, causing network executives to feel uneasy due to the depth and controversy depicted.

Lear’s most acclaimed creation, “All in the Family,” introduced the unforgettable character Archie Bunker, portrayed by Carroll O’Connor. The show, a top-rated U.S. television hit for five consecutive years, addressed racism, homophobia, and anti-Semitism through Archie’s controversial persona. Lear’s innovative thought challenged social norms. He started to converse about the complexity of humanity.
